University of Sydney

Where did you study before coming to the University of Sydney?
I studied economics for three years in Germany at the University of Bochum, located in the heart of the Ruhr (the largest economic region in Europe).

Why did Australia appeal to you to continue your education?
I decided to come to Australia because I have family here and I think the University of Sydney stood out above the rest. I had offers from other universities, but the University of Sydney has a great reputation internationally, and happened to have the specific course I wanted to do. I’m doing a Masters of International Business, and hope to work for a German (or international) company for about two years, and then experience working in Asia or North America.

How do you feel the university looks after new students?
Well, I’m involved in the Mentoring Program, which offers support for students in terms of research, group assignments, report writing, free courses, as well as helps new students integrate socially. For me it was great to get involved with the program, especially when I first got here and didn’t know anyone. The social barbeques and activities made it a lot easier to mix and make friends.

How do you feel about living in Sydney?
I think Sydney is not expensive compared to a lot of European cities and has fantastic weather! It is a laid-back society, which makes for a pleasant atmosphere in general.

Any advice for new students?
When you come to the University of Sydney, don’t be afraid to venture out, join clubs, and societies. You will experience living amongst people from many nationalities and make lifelong friendships. Coming here was the best decision I’ve made so far.
