Name: Dana Turkovic

Area of Study: Visual Arts – MA in Creative Computing
Place of Study: London, UK – Goldsmiths, University of London
Age: 29
“As a Masters student in Creative Curating, I have been given many opportunities to intensify my studies and really concentrate on the functions and inner workings of the highly respected arts community in London. Already, I find that my course at Goldsmiths has provided invaluable practical and intellectual approaches to being an engaged and enthusiastic arts professional. As part of my studies, I have been encouraged to travel to many places throughout the country to pursue tutorials with professionals working and contributing to the field, such as Suzanne Cotter, Senior Curator at Modern Art Oxford, and Gavin Wade, an independent curator based in Birmingham. Having moved from Los Angeles where I worked many years for the UCLA Hammer Museum as a graphic designer, I have taken a leap into the unknown by pursuing a specialized degree outside of the United States because of its intensity and connections with the cultural life of the United Kingdom.
During my first term I was given the privilege of hosting a gallery talk at the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park where I toured visitors around the exhibition and talked about the work shown there, while at the moment I am enthusiastically involved in a curatorial research project for the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
Already I feel I can successfully apply the knowledge I have learned from the community here in England to enrich the arts scene back in the United States. I am anxious to apply my specialized experience and added critical knowledge to each and every upcoming project I undertake. Also, I have built important personal and professional relationships with diverse and ambitious international artists and professionals that I intend to continue. To summarize, education in the United Kingdom has so far shown to be one of the best decisions I have had to make and has been an opportunity to realize my future curatorial ambitions. Also and most importantly, it has allowed me to view my purpose from the widest perspective, and allowed me to see myself from outside my own culture.”
